Bringing the World Closer: CND Kids Experience Wildlife Up Close

In November, we had the joy of welcoming our youth to a special hands-on program with The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Kids of all ages, along with many excited parents, gathered to meet some extraordinary animal ambassadors: Herbie the opossum, Otis the screech owl, Trout the African penguin, Sonny the sloth, and Duncan the dingo. Each animal offered a window into a different corner of the animal kingdom and the unique environments they call home.

The room buzzed with excitement as Sonny slowly clung to his makeshift branch, Trout waddled confidently across the table in pursuit of some fish treats, and Otis swiveled his head a full 180 degrees to take it all in. These small moments of wonder spark a child’s curiosity and broaden their sense of what’s possible in the world.

At Community for New Direction, this is exactly what we aim for – to expand children’s understanding of the world and show them the healthy, enriching paths available to them. Experiences like this build connection, confidence, and positive interests that help steer youth away from drugs, violence, and the negative pressure they might experience. They remind our young people that learning can be joyful, and that exploration doesn’t stop at the classroom door.

We’re grateful to The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for creating such a memorable afternoon, and Discover’s Shine Bright Center for offering us the space to gather. We look forward to more opportunities in 2026 that inspire, educate, and empower the youth we serve.
